Eastern Terminus: Junction US-20/NY-5 in Avon, southwest of Rochester.

Routing: Route 39 is in effect a large loop route that bypasses the Buffalo Metro Region to the south and east, serving as a useful alternate to both Route 5 and US-20. The highway begins easterly from US-20 in Sheridan progressing easterly from US-20. Route 39 enjoys a short concurrent routing with US-62 through Gowanda. Further east, Route 39 has the dubious distinction of marking the current (2009) southern terminus of the US-219 freeway at Springville. Once again further east Route 39 is co-designated with Route 16 through Yorkshire. At Route 19, Route 39 arcs from its previous almost due east routing beginning a northeasterly trajectory. US-20A runs concurrent with Route 39 through Geneseo. Past Geneseo, Route 39 continues northeasterly to Avon where the highway terminates once again at US-20.

Not
a road. One of the most interesting things about traveling through
the small towns of North America are the vestiges of the past they
contain. Many old main street theatre houses such as this in other
small New York or Ontario communities have long since closed -- remaining
only as silhouettes of the past on decaying and derelict, abandoned main streets. Springville's Joylan Theatre
is not only still open but has been lovingly cared for. The
vitrolite tiles suggest this venue dates back to sometime in the in the
1920s or 30s.
