KING`S HIGHWAY NO. 409

1989

Looking west from the Highway 409 west to Highway 427 north offramp towards the westbound Highway 409 mainline lanes as they cross under Highway 427. Summer of 1989.
Overhead gantry located on westbound Highway 409 at the Highway 427 NORTH exit. Again, we see that in 1989, "Toronto Airport" was preferred over "Pearson International Airport". Also, there is no reference to Highway 401 west on the Highway 427 south signage, as there is today. Summer of 1989.
Eastbound lanes of Highway 409 just east of the Highway 427 interchange in Etobicoke. Summer of 1989.
Looking east from the Carlingview Drive underpass on the eastbound lanes of Highway 409 towards the Atwell Drive interchage. Summer of 1989.

Facing east along the eastbound lanes of Highway 409 at City View Drive. The overpass in the background is Iron Street, in the foreground, is for a CPR spur. The 409, up until as recently as early 2008, has undergone very few modifications since 1989, when this photo was taken. As such, the modern highway up until early 2008 was almost indistinguishable from the highway in this photo.

Southbound Martin Grove Road onramp to westbound Highway 409 merging with the mainline westbound Highway 409 lanes. Iron Street overpass in the background. Summer of 1989.
Looking west along Highway 409 from the Martin Grove Road overpass. Here is a shot of the same location in 2006. With the exception of the addition of airline terminal information signs, little had changed about Highway 409 between 1989 and 2006.
Exit signage for the Highway 409 westbound onramp from northbound Martin Grove Road as it appeared in the summer of 1989. This sign remained unchanged until it was replaced with a more modern looking (although less clear) sign in 2005. You can view the new sign here, at Scott Steeves' Onthighway.com
Opposing view of the photo shown below at the westbound Highway 409 offramp to Kipling Avenue and Belfield Road. Summer of 1989.
Overhead gantry located at the terminus of the westbound Highway 409 offramp to Belfield Road and Kipling Avenue. A shot of the bilingual replica that exists to this very day can be seen here. Summer of 1989.
Westbound Highway 409 just after it departs from westbound Highway 401. Notice the somewhat stingy km marker to the right in the foreground. 2.5km would only bring the highway as far as roughly Highway 27. Also notice no reference to Martin Grove Road on the overhead sign in the background. Summer of 1989.
Ramp from Highway 401 westbound collectors to Highway 409 westbound. The overpass in these pictures carries the ramp from southbound Islington Avenue to westbound Highway 401. Summer of 1989.
