Southern Terminus: A-20 interchange in western Montreal, immediately east of Trudeau (Dorval Airport). Northern Terminus: A-640 interchange in Broisbriand Routing: A-13 starts its trek through the Western suburbs of Montreal at a tight interchange with Autoroute 20 just southeast of Trudeau (Dorval) Airport. The freeway progresses north through the Airport grounds, interchanging with A-520 at makeshift cloverleaf interchange. A-13 passes underneath Dorval's major runway approach through a 1km long tunnel, emerging a short distance south of the A-40 interchange. North of A-40, A-13 crosses Riviere des Prairies into Laval. Western Laval is still surprisingly rural -- A-13 intersects A-440 (Autoroute Laval) about midway across Ile Jesus. Past Laval, A-13 crosses Riveiere des Mille Iles into Boisbriand, where the freeway meets and terminates at A-640. Links:

Southbound diagram sign approaching the southern terminus of Highway 13. Autoroute Chomedy (Highway 13) ends at a very, very tight, quasi-trumpet interchange with A-20. The interchange is as tight as it is because Autoroute 20 is sandwiched between the CN and CP Railways, and the community of Lachine. |

Southbound advanced signage for A-520 West. One of the things that always strikes me, as I come from Ontario, is just how many Autoroute freeways there are in Quebec. MTQ (The Quebec Ministry of Transportation) has long favoured numerous narrow freeways traversing the environment, contrary to a few large ones, such as the ones that MTO (Ontario's Ministry of Transportation) builds. |

Advanced signage for Henri Bourassa Boulevard, overtop of the recently reconstructed Autoroute 13. As much as I love Ontario Highways, I have to say that Quebec builds a fine concrete highway. I don't know exactly how MTQ specifies the design of their concrete pavements, however Ontario's MTO could learn something from its smoothness specification. |

Overhead guide signage at the Henri Bourassa Boulevard exit. This short segment of eight lane highway is one of the widest stretches of freeway in all of Quebec. Numerous freeways in Quebec have frontage roads, and although these lanes seemingly add to the footprint of Quebec's roads, very few highways in Quebec are wider than six lanes. |

Advanced signage for the start of the frontage road network in Laval overtop of Rivière Des Prairies. Notice the moveable "zipper" barrier that has been installed overtop of the river bridge. The moveable barrier allows MTQ to add an additional travel lane to the predominant direction of flow during peak travel times. An extra southbound lane is added to ease traffic for the weekday morning commute, while a northbound lane is added to ease congestion during the PM peak period. |

This signage stands over the northbound service lanes of Autoroute 13 at the Boul. Ste-Rose interchange. Blue signs were used to delineated toll highways in Quebec. Autoroute 13 was tolled from its construction in 1975 until the tolls were lifted in the 1980s. |
