King's Highway 62 - www.OntHighways.com
Highway 62 is the major north-south Highway for the Belleville Region. Before 1998, it extended from Highway 33 at Bloomfield northerly to Maynooth, where it turned east and headed towards Pembroke via Barry's Bay. In 1998, all sections of Highway 62 lying north and east of Maynooth were formerly decommissioned.
Highway 62's routing around Round Lake near Killaloe was very circuitous and redundant. This routing was only supposed to be a temporary solution, several more direct connections were considered. Most notably a new alignment was considered (and was even shown as completed on a 1930s Official Road Map) that would have seen Highway 62 head northeast from Barry's Bay roughly along what is now Paugh Lake Road.
Originally, Highway 14 ran along Highway 62's current routing through Belleville. In 1982 all sections of Highway 14 south of Foxboro were incorporated into a southern extension of Highway 62. This renumbering greatly improved the logic of the Belleville and area highway network.

Southern Terminus: Junction Kings Highway 33 (Loyalist Parkway) at Bloomfield. Northern Terminus: Pre-1998: Junction Highway 17 and Highway 148 near Pembroke. Currently: Junction Highway 127 in Maynooth. Length: Pre-1998: 294.7 km, Currently: 164.9 km. Multiplexes: Currently Highway 62 is only multiplexed with Highway 28 from 100m. Before provincial downloading, in addition to the Highway 28 co-designation, Highway 62 was multiplexed with Highway 2 in Belleville for 1 km and with Highway 60 for 22.8 km from Barry's Bay to Killaloe Road. Freeway: No AADT (2002): Highest: 13,00 from Prince Edward Road 3 to Belleville and from Highway 401 to Highway 14 at Foxboro; Lowest: 1,600 from St. Ola Road northerly to Highway 620 (Coe Hill Road) Road Info: Highway 62 is a high standard route for its entire (current length). With the exception of the sections of highway immediately north and south of Belleville, traffic volumes are for the most part light on the route. Sections of Highway 62 can be quite scenic at times, particularly between Belleville and Madoc, though scenery is quite bland between Madoc and Bancroft. Hastings County no longer maintains a county road network of any sort, so sections of Highway 62 northeast of Maynooth to Renfrew County are maintained by local townships. North of Highway 60, Highway 62 has extremely light traffic volumes, and is more reminiscent of a secondary highway. |
