Highway 131 was transferred to the County of Simcoe on January 1, 1998, when the neighbouring Highway 27 and 90 were also downloaded from provincial responsibility. Highway 131 was a fairly new addition to the provincial highway network, and served as a partial west Barrie By-pass. This short section of highway was also part of a signed alternate to Highway 26 that by-passed Bayfield Street that took traffic from Innisfil Beach Road to Highway 26 at Minesing via Innisfil Beach Road, Highway 27, Highway 131, Highway 90 and County Road 26; while this routing seems convoluted, Bayfield Street (Highway 26 through Barrie) is notoriously congested, and motorists would be well advised to by-pass Bayfield Street during peak times.

Southern Terminus: Junction Highway 27 just southeast of Barrie. Northern Terminus: Junction Highway 90 just west of Barrie. Road Info: Highway 131 is in reasonable shape for its entire length. Southern sections of Highway 131 are still quite rural, while northern sections of Highway 131 are gradually being encroached by the City of Barrie. Speed limits along Highway 131 range from 60km/h to 80km/h dependant upon the surroundings. Highway 131 still makes an excellent by-pass of Bayfield Street if the aforementioned routing is taken. |
