King's Highway 24 - www.OntHighways.com
Highway 24 is presently a short highway that links the Town of Simcoe to the Southern Boundary of the City of Cambridge. Before the decimation of Ontario's Provincial Highway network, Highway 24 was a long highway that stretched northerly from Lake Erie to Nottawasaga Bay on Lake Huron nearly 200km to the north. Principal towns along Highway 24's routing included: Simcoe, Brantford/Paris, Cambridge, Guelph, Erin, Orangeville, Shelburne, and Collingwood.

Southern Terminus:
Pre-1997: Junction Highway 59, just south
of Walsingham, in the former Township of Walsingham. Current: Junction Highway 3, just north of Downtown Simcoe. Northern Terminus: Pre-1997: Junction Highway 26 in Downtown Collingwood. Current: The Cambridge/North Dumfries Boundary in Waterloo Region. Length: Pre-1997: 251.11km. Current: 64.1km. Multiplexes:
Pre-1997: Highway 53 (7.8km), Highway 2
(2.1km), Highway 7 (2.4km), Highway 25 (6.9km), Highway 10 (29.5), and
Highway 10/89 (4.0km) Freeway: Highway 24 is a freeway for 9km where the highway runs concurrent with Highway 403. AADT (2006): Highest: 15,200, from Lockie Road northerly to the Cambridge South Limits; Lowest: 6,150, from Nanticoke North Limits northerly to Jct. Highway 53. Road info: Highway 24 is a long and diverse highway. The section of Highway 403 south of Paris and Highway 403 is generally in good condition; it is generally well traveled, the section wouldn't be described as overly busy. Where Highway 24 runs concurrent with Highway 403 between Paris and Brantford. Between Brantford and Cambridge, Highway 24 has a mix of four-lane and two-lane segments. The two lane segments are particularly congested, and the highway is not particularly well designed. Highway 24 passes through Downtown Cambridge and Guelph, and is generally quite busy between the two communities. North of Guelph, Highway 24 is an efficient highway, however does have a short segment where the speed limit is 40km/h where Highway 24 runs through Erin. Highway 24 is generally a four-lane highway where it runs concurrent with Highway 10. North of Shelburne, Highway 24 is in generally good condition, though is subject to winter closures due to inclimate weather. |
