King's Highway 401 -   O N T   H I G H W A Y S

 Page 3   -   Toronto to Division Street, Kingston

Highway 401 is Southern Ontario's trans-provincial highway.  This particular section runs quite close to both Highway 2 and Lake Ontario for its entire length.  Notable cities on this section of Highway include:  Toronto, Oshawa, Belleville, and Kingston.

Highway 401 from West Hill in Scarborough to Ritson Road, Oshawa was actually the first part of the 401 (then Highway 2A) to be completed.  It was completed way back in 1947.  Because of its age, the freeway will see some major changes in the coming years through Durham.  These changes include some major widening and structure replacements.  At least two original 401 interchanges are being completely closed, with new more modern interchanges constructed nearby.  Harwood Avenue in Ajax has already been replaced with Salem Road, built just to the east.  Park Road, in Oshawa, is also slated to be replaced in the next few years, in favour of a more modern connection to Stevenson Road.  Durham Region and the MTO are also planning to add an interchange at Lake Ridge Road.

Highway 401 through Kingston (another early portion of 401 to be completed) is also being reconstructed and widened (to 6-lanes), with some new interchange configurations.  There has also been talk of continuing the '6-laning' of the 401 from Port Hope to Cobourg, and also 6-laning the 401 from Trenton to Belleville.

  Highway 401 information that pertains to the Toronto to Kingston section:

Multiplexes:  None

Freeway:  Entire Length

Control Cities:  EB: Kingston. (Cornwall east of exit #611).  WB. Toronto.  No control cities are posted within Toronto City Limits.

AADT (2001):  Highest:  371,400 from Bayview Avenue (exit #371) to Leslie Street (exit #373);

                             Lowest:  28,200 from Highway 49 (exit #566) to Deseronto Road (exit #570).

Road Info:  This area of Highway 401 also contains a core-distributor system.  This system extends from Kipling Avenue (see Page 2) all the way to Brock Road.  The core-distributor system may very well be expanded in the coming years.  The detailed designs for the new 407 connector that will be located just east of Lake Ridge Road in Whitby showed a full C-D to west from Ajax to Lake Ridge Road.  Highway 401 is six lanes from Salem Road to Port Hope, and then four lanes all the way to Kingston (and in fact Montreal).  Currently the MTO is in the process of widening the Kingston Bypass section of Highway 401 (from Highway 38 east to Highway 15) to six lanes, to improve driving conditions and traffic flow.  Pavement is smooth and the highway is well maintained for this entire section.
